What Is Lovable Cloud? A Beginner’s Guide

Lovable Cloud is Lovable’s built-in backend: the part of an application that stores data, manages user accounts and handles protected work away from the browser. It combines a managed PostgreSQL database, authentication, file storage and server-side capabilities, so you can describe a feature instead of separately setting up its infrastructure.

What you will learn and need

You will identify when a backend is useful, enable Cloud deliberately and verify a small data-backed feature. You need a Lovable project and permission to manage it. For a new project, Join Lovable. Use sample data—not real customer information—while learning.

1. Decide whether the project needs a backend

A simple public information website may not need accounts or a database. A saved reading list, booking system or private dashboard normally does. Write down the records you need, who owns them and which visitors may read or change them. Publishing the website and configuring its data permissions are different tasks.

2. Check which backend is already connected

Open the project’s More menu and inspect its Database, Users and Storage views. If your project already uses Cloud, you do not need a separate Supabase account: Cloud uses the same open-source foundation with Lovable-managed infrastructure. If it uses an externally connected backend, follow that connection’s settings instead. Do not connect a second backend just to follow a tutorial.

3. Enable Cloud for a concrete feature

In a project without a backend, the Database view can show an Enable card. Enabling the built-in backend provisions database, user accounts and storage together. Alternatively, describe a feature in chat and review the permission request before approving it. Ask what will be created before proceeding.

Build a private reading list using Lovable Cloud. Explain the proposed data model before implementing. Signed-in users may create, read, update and delete only their own saved books. Use sample book records for testing. Do not make the table publicly readable.

4. Inspect what was created

Check the table structure in More → Database, the account settings in Users and any files in Storage. Ask Lovable to explain the access rules in plain English. A working interface does not prove that another account cannot access the same records.

5. Verify it works beyond the first session

Create a test account, save a book and reload the page. Sign out and confirm the private list is inaccessible. Use a second account to confirm its list starts independently. Check loading, empty and error states rather than testing only a successful save.

Common questions and problems

Is Cloud the same as connecting my own Supabase project?

No. The underlying technology is related, but Cloud is managed through Lovable. An external project has its own management and billing arrangements.

Can I turn Cloud off to return to a static project?

Do not treat Cloud as a reversible experiment. Changing permissions for future projects does not detach an existing Cloud backend. Moving an app to another backend requires a planned migration, including data, files, authentication and configuration.

Why does data disappear after a refresh?

Ask Lovable whether the feature still uses temporary browser state or demo records instead of durable database writes. Request the actual save error if the write failed.

Is backend usage covered by the same credits as prompting?

Do not assume it is. Check current Cloud usage and billing documentation and your workspace controls; usage costs and limits can change.
