How to Add User Login and Registration to Lovable

To add login and registration to a Lovable app, ask Lovable to use your existing backend’s authentication, create signup and sign-in pages and protect account-only features. With Lovable Cloud, configure email authentication in the Users settings. Test confirmation, sign-out and password recovery as well as a successful login.
What you will learn and need
You will build email/password accounts and a private dashboard. You need a project, a backend and test email addresses you control. Start with Join Lovable if you do not yet have a project. These instructions use Cloud; external backend account settings are managed separately.
1. Define public and private areas
List which pages anyone can read and which require an account. A public product page can stay public while a personal dashboard is private. Define what information belongs to each user and how account deletion should handle it. Registration is not automatically needed for every page.
2. Request a complete account flow
Add email/password registration, sign-in, sign-out and password recovery using the current backend. Keep the homepage public. Require an authenticated account for the dashboard. Each person can read and change only their own records. Show clear validation and expired-link errors without revealing whether an email is registered. Include an account deletion flow with confirmation and explain its data consequences.
Ask Lovable to explain the changes before touching an existing account system. Do not replace working authentication just to add a new screen.
3. Configure email authentication
Open More → Users and the email authentication settings. Official documentation may show this as Settings → Email; some interfaces label the panel Auth settings. Enable the method if it is disabled. Keep email confirmation enabled unless you deliberately understand and accept the trade-off. Without auto-confirm, new users must follow the confirmation email before signing in.
Review the site and return URLs used in confirmation and recovery emails. Test the actual published domain, not only the editor preview. Never paste passwords or private keys into project chat.
4. Protect the records, not just the dashboard
Hiding a page from signed-out visitors does not restrict direct database requests. Ask Lovable to enforce per-user ownership with row-level security and to validate protected actions on the backend. Account profile information and authorization roles are different concepts; a user-editable profile must not grant admin privileges.
5. Verify every branch
Register a fresh account and complete email confirmation. Confirm it appears in More → Users, can sign in and can sign out. Reload the private dashboard after sign-out and check access is denied. Create records with two separate test accounts and ensure neither can access the other’s data.
Request a password reset, follow the received link, set a new password and verify it works. Check expired links and unsuccessful submissions. Testing the recovery form alone does not establish that emails are delivered.
Common problems and FAQs
Why can I not sign in immediately after registering?
Email confirmation may still be pending. Check the actual message and account settings rather than enabling auto-confirm as a shortcut.
Why does the reset link go to the wrong place?
Review the configured site URL, allowed redirects and recovery page on the domain you are testing.
Can Google login be added later?
Yes, it is an additional method. Test how returning identities associate with existing accounts instead of assuming a different email will merge automatically.
Does a private page mean the data is private?
No. Verify database policies and backend authorization separately.
