How to Remix a Lovable Project: Complete Beginner's Guide

Remixing creates a new, independent Lovable project from an existing one. Open a remixable project, choose Remix, sign in if needed and follow the copy options. Your edits do not change the original. A working source app does not mean its accounts, payments or integrations will work in your copy without setup.

What you will learn and need

You will learn where to start a remix, how to choose copy options and what to check next. You need a Lovable account and either access to the original project or a link with public remixing enabled. Join Lovable if you do not have an account. Browse BuildNomadic projects for live starting points, and read each project’s setup instructions.

1. Check that the project is remixable

Try its demo first. Check the main workflow, mobile layout and features you actually need. A published website is not automatically remixable: the owner must allow public remixing, or you must already have appropriate project access. If Remix is unavailable, read the displayed explanation rather than attempting to bypass access restrictions.

2. Choose a remix entry point

For a project you can access, use the dashboard project card’s three-dot menu and choose Remix. In the editor, use the project menu or project settings and choose Remix this project or Remix, depending on the displayed interface. A public remix link opens a preview with a remix action. Menu wording can evolve; Lovable’s official remix guide is the reference.

3. Review the copy options

Where available, you can choose to include history, project files and custom knowledge. History includes chat history and its attached files; Files-tab items are a separate option. Template remixes do not offer all the same options. For a built-in-backend project, review the database region choice carefully: the remix guide says it cannot be changed afterward.

4. Inspect your new project before changing it

Code and database structure carry over; database records, secrets, custom domains, collaborators, publish state and service connections do not. Do not assume the original app’s users or business data exist in your copy. Review storage, authentication and external integrations separately.

Inspect this remixed project without making changes. Summarise its pages, main workflow, database structure and integrations. Identify missing configuration and any references to the original owner. Do not invent credentials, sample customers or working service connections.

5. Make one small change and test it

Change a heading or brand name first, then use the preview. Once that works, reconfigure services and test the full workflow before publishing. Keep larger changes in a separate plan so you can tell whether a problem came from remix setup or new development.

How to verify your remix

Confirm you are in the new project, not the source. Change one visible element and verify the source remains unchanged. Check empty-data states, account creation if applicable and the project’s setup checklist. Never use real payments as a setup test.

Common errors

  • No Remix action: public remixing may be disabled or your access may be insufficient. Ask the owner for a remixable link.
  • Empty dashboard: database records are not copied; add your own authorised data.
  • Login or integrations fail: reconnect the service and configure the new app’s addresses and credentials.
  • External backend restriction: Lovable documents additional edit-access requirements for projects connected to an external backend.

Frequently asked questions

Does remixing affect the original?

No. Your copy is independent and does not stay synchronised with the source.

Is remixing a free project the same as free hosting and unlimited building?

No. A free starting point does not remove Lovable plan limits, build-credit usage or external-service costs.

Do I need a video to follow this guide?

No. These written steps are sufficient; a video can be added when available.
