How to Customise a Lovable Template and Make It Your Own

Customise a Lovable template by remixing it into your own project, understanding the existing workflow and changing the content, brand and features in small, testable steps. Keep working foundations unless you have a clear reason to replace them.

What you will learn and need

You will learn how to evaluate a template, preserve its useful parts and make it genuinely yours. You need a Lovable account, a suitable template and your own approved text and images. Join Lovable to create your copy.

1. Choose the right kind of template

Lovable’s public templates gallery contains ready-made projects that can be remixed on any plan. Browsing does not require an account, but making a copy does. This is different from + → Use a template, the existing-project template feature available on Business and Enterprise plans. Do not assume a paid-plan template feature is required to remix a public gallery project.

2. Preview and make an independent copy

Test the template’s key pages and workflow. Use its Remix action or the preview’s Use template action. A remix starts unpublished. Its external service connections and secrets do not carry over, and template remixes do not expose all the optional copy settings available for other projects.

3. Create a keep/change checklist

List what already works: navigation, forms, account flows and layouts. Then list what must change: company name, colours, images, copy and service configuration. Separate optional features from launch essentials. This stops a visual refresh accidentally becoming a full rewrite.

Review this template before changing it. My app is a booking enquiry site for an independent tutor. Identify what can stay, what needs rebranding and what integrations require setup. Preserve the existing working navigation and forms. Propose a small ordered checklist; do not implement yet.

4. Replace content and branding in a focused pass

Provide your real name, contact information and original media. Ask for a coherent update across pages, metadata and forms, not just the homepage. Do not publish the template owner’s testimonials or example business details as your own.

Apply my approved brand and copy across the existing site. Replace the old name in visible content and page metadata, use the supplied logo and images, and preserve the current routes and form behaviour. Flag any missing business information instead of inventing it.

5. Adapt the workflow only where necessary

Add one change at a time, such as a new enquiry field. Define the validation, saved result and error state. For larger changes, ask Plan mode to investigate dependencies first. Re-test the original workflow after each update.

How to verify it works

Open every public page and check for leftover template text. Submit a form with valid and invalid input. Test the smallest screen you expect people to use. Confirm any integration belongs to your organisation and uses the correct environment. Follow the project’s setup guide before publishing.

Common errors

  • Only the homepage is rebranded: request an inventory of remaining old names, images and metadata.
  • Example data looks real: remove it or label it clearly; add only your own authorised records.
  • A visual change breaks a form: narrow the change and test form behaviour separately.
  • Paid template confusion: distinguish the public gallery from the Business/Enterprise existing-project template feature.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change everything?

You can edit your independent copy, but respect third-party asset licences and the source project’s terms.

Will the template receive the creator’s future updates?

No. A remix is not a synchronised subscription to the source.

Should I add all my features at once?

Usually not. A small launch workflow is easier to verify than a large untested redesign.
