How to Connect Supabase to Lovable

How to Connect Supabase to Lovable

To connect your own Supabase project to Lovable, use Lovable’s Supabase integration flow, authorize your account and choose the organization and project you want to connect. Then ask Lovable to build against that backend. If your app already runs on Lovable Cloud, you do not need this connection: Cloud already supplies the built-in database, authentication and storage.

Before you begin

This guide is for a project where an external connection is appropriate—not a promise that an existing Cloud app can be switched with a button. You need access to the Lovable project, a Supabase account and permission to connect the intended external project. For a fresh Lovable project, Join Lovable. Use a dedicated test backend before touching production data.

1. Confirm why you need an external project

An existing database, a team-managed backend or a requirement for direct infrastructure administration may justify it. For a beginner starting with no existing backend, Lovable Cloud usually avoids separate setup. Review the current backend first; do not attach a second system to fix an unrelated interface bug.

2. Prepare the external project

Create or choose the external Supabase project and confirm its organization, region and ownership. If it already contains data, review backups and who can authorize schema changes. Do not give a learning project access to an unrelated production database.

3. Use Lovable’s connection flow

Follow the current official integration guide and locate the Supabase connection in Lovable’s integrations or project connection controls. Authorize the account when prompted and select the intended organization and project. Interface labels may change, so follow the connection dialog rather than an outdated screenshot.

Confirm the selected project before approving. Keep private credentials in the platform’s approved credential controls—not in a public prompt, source file or screenshot.

4. Build one small data-backed feature

Use the external backend connected to this project. First explain the connection and inspect the existing schema. Add a private saved-notes feature without changing unrelated tables. Signed-in users may access only their own notes. Include required access privileges and row-level security, surface database errors and explain how I can verify the result with two test accounts.

Review proposed migrations and policies. Do not request a broad public read policy merely because a query returns no rows.

5. Verify the connection end to end

Create a note through the app, reload it and check the saved record in the external backend’s management tools. Edit and delete it, then verify the result reads back. Confirm a second user and a signed-out visitor cannot access the first user’s notes. Test the published app’s authentication return URLs as well as preview.

Troubleshooting and FAQs

I cannot see the project in the connection picker

Check which external account and organization you authorized, and whether you have access to that project. Reauthorize through the connection flow if the wrong account was selected.

Can I move a Cloud app by connecting an empty project?

No automatic transfer should be assumed. Plan database schema and data, files, users, policies, protected functions and app configuration separately. An export of database records is not a full storage or authentication migration. Do not delete the old backend before validating the destination.

Does this guide apply to Cloud’s settings?

No. Cloud is managed inside Lovable; an external project uses its own management tools and billing. Keep those workflows distinct.
