How to Connect Lovable to GitHub

To connect Lovable to GitHub, open the project’s Git settings, connect GitHub and link the project to a repository. Lovable changes sync to the linked branch, and commits pushed to that synced branch come back to Lovable. Keep the branch working and avoid rewriting already-pushed history.

What you need

You need a GitHub account and permission to connect a repository or organization. For a project, Join Lovable. Remove any private credentials from code before connecting.

1. Decide why you need GitHub

Common reasons include a repository copy you control, external code review or local development. GitHub does not transfer platform ownership of the Lovable project.

2. Connect from project settings

Open Project settings → Git and connect GitHub. Workspace authorization and the project’s repository link are separate parts of the setup.

3. Understand two-way sync

Changes in Lovable sync to the repository. Pushing commits to the synced branch updates Lovable. Use feature branches for larger experiments and merge only working code.

Copyable review prompt

Review this project before GitHub sync. Identify any secrets that must stay out of the repository and explain which repository and branch are connected. Preserve existing application behavior and do not rewrite pushed history. List the checks I should run before merging local changes back into the synced branch.

4. Verify the connection

Make a small, harmless change in Lovable and confirm it appears in GitHub. Push a small documentation change to the synced branch and confirm it appears in Lovable.

Common mistakes

Do not force-push or rewrite already-pushed history on the connected branch; it can damage project history. Do not commit API keys or .env secrets.

FAQs

Is GitHub a backup?

It provides a repository copy, but database data and uploaded files need their own backup plan.

Can I edit locally?

Yes. Push to the synced branch when the work is ready, then check the preview.

Why did a change not appear?

Check the correct repository, branch and sync status.
